1How long do you want to walk and eat?

Osaka food tours look alike until you read the fine print: hours on foot, dishes, drinks, group cap and who is turned away. Here is how the listings compare, number by number.

What really separates one Osaka food tour from the next

Osaka food tours sell a simple thing: a guide, a few counters and a handful of dishes eaten on your feet or on a stool. Japan's tourism board describes a seemingly endless variety of street food, from takoyaki and okonomiyaki to yakitori, gyoza and udon.1 Osaka's own tourism bureau calls the cheap and delicious versions konamon and says they are a major part of Kansai food culture.2 A tour is a way to meet that food culture with someone who knows which counter to pick.

What changes between listings is measurable. Length runs from 2 hours for a Kuromon Market walk to 3 hours for the street food tours around Shinsekai. On the Shinsekai walks the eatery count is 4 or 5, and the dish count runs from 12 to 20 across the listings below. A single booking can take as few as 7 travelers or as many as 30. Those are the levers worth comparing, far more than the adjectives in a title.

Price follows those levers loosely. Viator from prices range from $41 for a small-group Namba walk to $231 for a tour that lists 4 food stops, 1 drink and a dessert, with our own listing starting from $84. A tour that costs more is not automatically a bigger meal, so read what the price includes: drinks, dessert, a cooking lesson or only the tastings.

The Shinsekai walk we link to, in plain numbers

Our listing is a walking food tour of Shinsekai that lasts 3 hours, led by a live guide in English. The title promises 18 foods and 3 drinks at 4 eateries, and the inclusions list the foods, the drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), a guide and visits to 4 local restaurants. Anything beyond that is yours to buy, since additional food and drinks are listed as not included.

The route has two named stops: the retro streets of Shinsekai, which take the full 180 minutes, and Tsutenkaku, the tower of the district. The district suits the food. Osaka's tourism bureau says Janjan Yokocho in Shinsekai is known as the town of kushikatsu, lined with restaurants that opened soon after the war.3 You meet outside MEGA Don Quijote Shinsekai at street level, and the nearest station is Dobutsuen-mae, Exit 5, a 1-minute walk away.

A booking takes 1 to 8 travelers and needs at least one adult, and the tour group itself is up to 15. Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before for a full refund. The listing carries 3,964 ratings averaging 4.9, and 3,816 of them are five-star. Strong numbers, but they rate the whole outing, not any single dish.

Each bar is the from price on the listing, so the dearer walks are not automatically bigger meals.

Other Shinsekai tours, side by side

Rivals cover the same ground. One Viator listing offers 15 signature dishes and 3 drinks at 5 eateries in Shinsekai, from $76, with 4,160 ratings averaging 4.9. A second, built around 15 or more tastings at 5 eateries, adds karaage, yakitori, takoyaki, udon, oden, kushikatsu and dessert, from $84, with 3,816 ratings averaging 4.9. A third lists 20 dishes and 3 drinks at 4 eateries, from $78, on 495 ratings.

The differences show up in the fine print. The 15-dish listing says vegans and guests who need gluten-free or allergy handling cannot join, and the 15-tastings listing says it cannot cater for gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian diets. Ours can somewhat accommodate vegetarian requests and allergies but warns that tastings may be reduced. If you eat by rules, that single line may decide the booking.

Group size varies as well. One booking on the 15-dish and the 15-tastings listings takes up to 9 travelers, the 20-dish listing takes up to 10 and ours takes up to 8. The 15-tastings listing is wheelchair accessible but not suitable for children under 7. Check the age and access lines before you plan around a family.

Shorter walks: Kuromon, Namba and the backstreets

A 2-hour walk through Kuromon Market gives 5 to 6 food samplings and tour photos, passes Namba Grand Kagetsu and Dotonbori, and costs from $52. Japan's tourism board names the Nishiki and Kuromon markets as places with an abundance of street food.7 The cap is 7 travelers per booking. A 2.5-hour guided tour with 12 dishes and 2 drinks costs from $65, takes bookings of up to 30 travelers and is wheelchair accessible.

A small-group Namba tour of up to 8 guests visits 3 to 4 backstreet izakaya, with alcoholic beverages and snacks included, from $41. The listing adds that guests spend around JPY 3,000 to 4,000 extra, cash only. Japan's tourism board describes izakaya as pub-like places serving a huge variety of dishes, typically tapas-style in small portions to go with drinks.8

An evening walk with an izakaya dinner, alcoholic beverages and hidden bar introductions starts from $107 on 1,154 ratings averaging 4.9, and its minimum drinking age is 20. The route includes Hozenji temple and the Ura-Namba backstreets. Osaka's tourism bureau says Ura-Namba has been a bar-hopping spot since around 2010 and is known for standing bars.9,10 That is a night out with food in it, not a daytime tasting.

A cooking lesson, a dessert and the premium end

One listing combines a walk through Dotonbori and Shinsekai with 2 drinks, 1 piece of okonomiyaki, 7 pieces of kushikatsu, a few pieces of takoyaki and a lesson in cooking okonomiyaki, from $109. Transportation of 190 JPY is not included. Japan's tourism board says that at most Osaka okonomiyaki restaurants you can cook your own, so a lesson is one way to do it with help.11

At the top of the price range sits a tour with 4 food stops, 1 drink and a traditional Japanese dessert, through Dotonbori, Hozenji Yokocho, Sennichimae Doguyasuji and Kuromon Market, from $231, with 340 ratings averaging 4.8. Its minimum drinking age is 21 and one booking takes up to 10 travelers. Hozenji Yokocho is a short stretch of about 100 meters lined with restaurants of all sizes.12

GetYourGuide lists comparable tours too: one with 15 dishes and 3 drinks from $62 on 2,730 reviews, and a Shinsekai tour limited to 8 participants from $71 on 1,772 reviews. Prices differ by listing, so open the ones you like side by side before you decide.

Before you book

A checklist for choosing and showing up

Check the listing3

  • Read the diet and allergy lines before you pay
  • Note the cancel window: 24 hours before for a full refund
  • Look at what the price includes: drinks, dessert, a lesson

Bring along3

  • Some cash for extras, as Japan still needs it in many places4
  • Your confirmation on your phone for the meeting spot
  • Time to find the sign outside the store at street level

On the street3

  • Follow local rules about eating while walking in markets5
  • Skip the tip, which is not expected in Osaka restaurants6
  • Ask ahead about wheelchairs, strollers or infant seats

How to choose without a spreadsheet

Start with the diet, because it removes options fastest. If you eat no meat, no gluten or no shellfish, read the exclusion lines first. Our listing, the 20-dish listing and the backstreet listing each say something different about vegetarians: ours partly accommodates them, the 20-dish listing does not offer full vegetarian accommodation, and the backstreet listing has a vegetarian option if you ask at booking.

Then choose the hour. An evening walk adds the standing bars, and Japan's tourism board points out that izakaya serve small portions meant to go with drinks.8 Pick the evening if drinking is part of the plan. On our listing the 3 drinks can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic, so the drinks are not a reason to avoid it.

Finally, look at the crowd. A group of up to 15 is a social outing; a booking cap of 7 or 8 feels closer to eating with a guide and a few friends. There is no single best food tour in Osaka, and neither group size is better in the abstract. If you like to ask a lot of questions, favor the smaller number.

What no listing can promise

No listing can tell you how hungry the walk will make you, or how long a stall's queue will be on your day. Japan's tourism board notes that some markets may ask you not to eat or drink while walking, so follow the local rules wherever you stand.5 On a tour the guide handles that for you, which is part of what the price buys.

Osaka's weather shapes the mood of a walk too. The city gets very humid in summer, February is the coldest month, and the rainy season generally runs from early June to late July.13 A covered arcade and a table under a roof are worth more in the wet weeks than a window seat is in spring.

Last, cash and cards. Japan still has many places where cash is required, even as cashless shopping grows, and its tourism board advises keeping some cash on hand.4,14 The Namba listing states that extra spending is cash only. Tipping is not expected in Osaka restaurants, so there is nothing to budget for there.6
