The guides taught us about Osaka's history, showed us local highlights and fed us delicious food, with sake and beer to go with it. A great evening.

We love food tours for what they teach about a culture. Our guide led us through small restaurants and narrow alleys, and we found new flavors.

Small, very local restaurants and a guide who explained the food and the neighborhood well. It felt authentic, entertaining and worth the money.

We had a great time walking the streets of Osaka, learned some highlights of the area and ate really good food. I would recommend it to anyone.

Our guide was wonderful and keen to show the group the neighborhood. The food was great, we learned about the area and we even found time for photos.

Everything was well planned: meals were chosen ahead, with alternatives for people avoiding certain foods, and seats were waiting for us. A real variety of regional dishes.
inside the walk
Our pick for an Osaka street food tour is a walking food tour of Shinsekai that lasts 3 hours, led by a live guide in English. The title promises 18 foods and 3 drinks at 4 eateries, and the inclusions list the foods, the drinks, which can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic, a guide and visits to 4 local restaurants.
The itinerary names two stops: the retro streets of Shinsekai, which take the full 180 minutes, and Tsutenkaku, the tower of the district. Additional food and drinks are not included, so anything beyond the tasting is yours to buy at the counter.
The tour group is up to 15, and a single booking takes 1 to 8 travelers and needs at least one adult. The price starts from $84 per person, a from price that the booking panel confirms for your date. Free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before for a full refund.

the district
Osaka's tourism bureau says Janjan Yokocho in Shinsekai is known as the town of kushikatsu, lined with long-established restaurants that opened soon after the war and popular places with long lines of customers. Kushikatsu is meat and vegetables on skewers, coated in batter and breadcrumbs and deep-fried.
The famous rule here is no double dipping: you dip each skewer in the shared sauce once, and you may eat as much cabbage as you like at the counter. The bureau also says kushikatsu restaurants cluster in the Shinsekai area around Tsutenkaku Tower, while okonomiyaki and takoyaki are more abundant in the Minami area.
That split explains why a Shinsekai walk reads differently from a Dotonbori one. It is the place to meet the fried skewer and the old streets together, and it is a short step from Dobutsuen-mae Station, Exit 5. Other guides on this site cover Minami, the market and the night.

finding the start
You meet your guide outside MEGA Don Quijote Shinsekai, at street level, below the large Don Quijote sign, with a FamilyMart next to the entrance. The listing asks you not to go into Don Quijote or MARUHAN or upstairs, so stay on the pavement.
The nearest station is Dobutsuen-mae, Exit 5, a 1-minute walk away. Reviews say the meeting spot can take a moment to find, with one group walking past their guide a couple of times before they connected, so arrive early and look for the sign.
Osaka is a large city and the area is busy in the evening, so allow time to get there. Our map on the Dotonbori and Shinsekai guides shows the station and the district, and you can open the same spot in Google Maps from there.

on the plate
The record behind our listing says 18 local foods across 4 restaurants, with 3 drinks, and it does not name the dishes. Reviews mention gyoza, takoyaki and sushi among the foods, which fits the local cooking around the district. Treat the list as a spread of small tastings and not as a fixed menu.
Osaka's tourism bureau describes takoyaki as a classic fast food sold from stalls, with shops only beginning to appear in the 1950s, and kushikatsu as the city's famous skewers. Both are typical of the konamon, or cheap street food, that the bureau calls a major part of Kansai food culture.
If a particular dish matters to you, ask the operator before booking and keep the answer. A listing that names its dishes is easier to plan around, and ours is honest about what it leaves open. Our what-to-eat guide covers the dishes Osaka is known for, whichever tour you choose.

what guests say
The reviews we read praise the guides by name, calling them fun, knowledgeable and friendly, and they describe small and very local restaurants where the food was tasty and plentiful. Several say the walk mixed food with the history of the area and of Osaka, and that it was a good way to start a trip to Japan.
The scores are strong. The listing carries 3,964 ratings averaging 4.9, of which 3,816 are five-star, 123 four-star, 9 three-star, 10 two-star and 6 one-star. A rating measures the whole evening, though, so read the reviews as well as the average before you book.
A few reviews are less glowing. One wished for a lower or higher standard of food, one thought the portions were more than they could finish, and one found the guide's English limited. We include these because they are the honest side of a popular tour, and a food walk depends on the guide on the night.

FAQ
Meet at street level below the large sign; the nearest station is Dobutsuen-mae, Exit 5, a 1-minute walk.
The itinerary gives the Shinsekai streets the full 180 minutes.
They are served at 4 eateries, and additional food and drinks are not included.
A booking takes 1 to 8 travelers and needs at least one adult.
It is a from price; the booking panel gives the exact figure for your date.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled start for a full refund.
The tour can somewhat accommodate vegetarian requests and allergies, but gluten-free is not fully accommodated.
Infant seats are available, and a booking needs at least one adult.
It suits all physical fitness levels but is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
The free cancellation window closes 24 hours before, and Osaka's rainy season generally runs from early June to late July.
drinks and diets
The three drinks are alcoholic or non-alcoholic, as you prefer. Diets need a little more care. The operator says it can partly cater to vegetarian requests, allergies and food dislikes, and warns that tastings may shrink; gluten-free cannot be fully handled, with smaller tastings there too.
Other Shinsekai listings are stricter: one says vegans cannot join and another says it cannot cater for gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian diets. Japan's tourism board adds that even stocks and sauces in Japan usually contain some meat ingredients, so say clearly what you cannot eat.
Tell the operator about allergies and diets before the day, in writing if you can, and bring a card in Japanese. Our vegetarian and halal guide goes through how to ask, which dishes carry dashi and where to find help.
Reserve and cancel for freeWhat the title promises
The title promises 18 foods and 3 drinks at 4 eateries.
The inclusions list 18 local foods, 3 drinks that can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic, a guide and visits to 4 local restaurants, and additional food and drinks are not included.
cost and cancel
Our tour starts from $84 per person. For comparison, a convenience store or station bento costs 400 to 900 yen, which marks the budget floor for a meal in Japan. The tour's price buys 18 foods, 3 drinks and a guide, and anything more is extra.
Tipping is not customary in Japan, and Osaka's tourism bureau says that saying arigato to the staff is fine. Japan still has many places where cash is required, so keep a little on hand for the extras you may want.
Cancellation is generous: for a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled start, and not after. That makes it easy to book early for a trip that is still taking shape and then drop the tour if your plans move.

who it suits
It suits curious eaters who like to try many small things and hear a story at each stop. The listing is suitable for all physical fitness levels, accepts strollers and has infant seats available, and public transportation is nearby. A booking needs at least one adult.
It is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. Guests with strict diets should read the diet lines first, since vegetarian requests are only somewhat accommodated and gluten-free is not fully handled.
If you want a long, sit-down dinner or a bar crawl, other tours do that better. Ours is a walk with eating stops, led by someone who orders for the group. Our comparison guide sets this tour beside Dotonbori, Kuromon, Namba and backstreet options.

the season
Osaka gets very humid in summer, February is the coldest month, and the rainy season generally runs from early June to late July. Japan's tourism board adds that August and September may bring typhoons, and that summer is stiflingly hot and intensely humid. A walk with stops under cover is a comfortable plan in those months.
Autumn is a great time to taste what is in Japan's larder, and in winter the board suggests hot sake and a bowl of bubbling hot-pot. The weather block below shows monthly highs, lows and wet days from NOAA so you can pick a month that suits your plans.
A reviewer mentions a little rain and a guide whose cheer made the evening anyway. Bring a light jacket or umbrella in the wet weeks, and check the listing's weather policy at booking: the free cancellation window lets you decide a day ahead.

beyond the walk
A tour is a start, not the whole story. Before you book any Osaka food tour, note that this site also compares tours, explains takoyaki and okonomiyaki, walks Dotonbori and Kuromon Market, covers Shinsekai and kushikatsu in more detail, and looks at night food, where to eat, prices, a do-it-yourself crawl and special diets.
Osaka's tourism bureau says Hozenji Yokocho, a lane of about 100 meters, is lined with kappo, yakitori, oden and sushi restaurants, and that Ura-Namba is known for standing bars. Those are the places to go once the guided tasting has shown you what you like.
Use the tour as an orientation and the guides as a map. After three hours you will know which dishes you want more of, which counters felt right and which lanes you want to see again, and the guides here say where to find them.
Reserve and cancel for freefair warnings
Not every review is happy. One reviewer left bitter because the guide said little about the food and the amount did not justify the price, one felt there was too little food for the money, and one thought the food was only fair. Food tours depend on the guide, the group and the night.
The listing is also not a private evening: groups are up to 15, and a reviewer notes that another group from the same company started at the same time. The meeting point can be hard to spot among the crowds, so give yourself time to find it.
Our advice is to book the free-cancellation option, read the diet lines and arrive hungry but not starving. If you want a smaller group, other listings cap the party at 8, and our comparison guide shows which. A good food walk is a good meal, not a lottery.
